COIverify vs. TrustLayer

TrustLayer raised $22M and is the most well-funded company in the COI tracking category. We're a 2026 self-serve alternative built for the SMB tier they're structurally priced out of. Here's where each one wins, with no spin.

The short version

Pick TrustLayer if you have 1,000+ active vendor COIs, a VP-level Risk Management function, enterprise procurement, and you want every subcontractor to log in to a vendor portal and self-manage their own COI.

Pick COIverify if you have 50–500 active COIs, a $5–50M revenue firm, and you want public pricing, self-serve onboarding, and a verdict in 30 seconds without sitting through a sales demo.

Both tools are real. Both do COI tracking competently. The difference is shape: TrustLayer is built around an enterprise buying motion; we're built around a product-led growth one. The shape determines the fit.

Where TrustLayer is genuinely better

We are not going to pretend TrustLayer is a bad product. They built the category and they have real strengths:

  • Vendor portal.Their portal is mature. Subcontractors log in, upload their own COIs, manage their own renewals. For a 1,000-vendor program, that distribution of effort is the difference between viable and unviable. We don't have a vendor portal and don't plan to build one — that's deliberate, not an oversight.
  • AMS integrations.TrustLayer integrates with Applied Epic, AMS-360, and others. If your firm wants COI data to flow from broker AMS to your dashboard, that's real value. We don't do that.
  • Enterprise reporting.Custom dashboards, roll-ups across business units, board-ready exports. If you need that, you need it. We don't prioritize it because our buyer is a $5–50M firm with one office manager doing this work.
  • Brand recognition with risk consultants. If your firm hires an external risk consultant to evaluate your vendor program, they've heard of TrustLayer. They probably haven't heard of us yet.

Where COIverify is genuinely better

  • Pricing transparency.$99 / $299 / $799, published, on the homepage, before you talk to anyone. No "contact us for pricing."
  • Time to value. You can have your first COI verified in five minutes. With TrustLayer, you're booking a demo, sitting through it, getting a quote, signing an MSA, and then implementing. That's weeks of clock time before you've verified anything.
  • AI-native extraction quality. We're a 2026 build. The extraction layer is an LLM tuned specifically for the long tail of carrier-custom variants — Travelers, Liberty Mutual, Chubb, Markel, AmTrust, Berkley — where ACORD-template extractors miss fields. TrustLayer's extraction was built before LLMs existed and is being retrofitted.
  • Cost structure that fits an SMB customer.TrustLayer's cost structure is built for $1,000+/mo customers; ours is built for $99/mo customers. That sounds obvious but it shapes everything from product decisions to support response time.
  • No vendor-side rollout project. You don't need to convince your subcontractors to log into another portal, and you don't need to chase the ones who won't. You just keep doing what you're already doing — receiving COI PDFs by email — and let us verify them.

The decision tree

This is the honest version:

  • You have a Risk Management VP and 1,000+ active vendors? Go with TrustLayer. It's built for you.
  • You have a CFO, an office manager, and 50–500 active COIs that currently live in a spreadsheet? Pick COIverify. We're built for you.
  • You're between 500 and 1,000 active COIs and don't have a dedicated risk function? You're in the gap. The spreadsheet is failing you and TrustLayer is overkill. Try COIverify's Team or Pro tier first; if you outgrow us in year two, the data exports cleanly and you can move up.

What about the migration?

If you're currently on TrustLayer and considering moving: your COI data exports cleanly. We'll help you import contract requirement templates and the active COI library; the work takes about a day for a 250-COI library. You can keep TrustLayer alive in parallel for a billing cycle while you verify the new flow.

That said, if your team is happy on TrustLayer and the bill is fine, don't move just to save money. The switching cost isn't free, and our pricing advantage compounds for new customers more than it does for switchers.

Frequently asked questions

Is COIverify cheaper because the product is less capable?

No, the product is more focused. We deliberately don't build a vendor portal, we don't do live broker AMS sync, and we don't do enterprise GRC workflows. Those are the line items TrustLayer's pricing has to cover. We don't carry that cost so we don't pass it on.

Will TrustLayer launch a $99/mo tier and squash COIverify?

They might. It would be a 6–12 month structural rebuild — sales comp plans, customer success ratios, support staffing, and product packaging all assume an enterprise customer. We're betting we can capture the SMB tier before they pivot.

Can I see real extraction accuracy numbers?

Yes. We publish per-field benchmark scores against a 1,000-PDF carrier sample. Sign up and we'll show you the methodology and the scoreboard. We hold ourselves to 95%+ on the standard coverages.
